- FT has learned about the disruption by the British authorities of the deal of a businessman from the Russian Federation to buy a golf club
The British government has blocked the acquisition of the Grange-over-Sands golf club in England near the military infrastructure by Russian businessman Yuri Shamara and his daughter Anastasia. This was reported on April 25 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing officials.
"We take the security of critical national infrastructure extremely seriously, and the government has broad powers to review transactions that may raise national security concerns," a British government spokesman said in a statement.
As explained in the newspaper, the golf club is located near the railway line leading to the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, as well as to the UK's largest nuclear waste storage facility, Sellafield.
The goal club reported that the deal was canceled by a potential buyer. Anastasia confirmed this information in an interview with the newspaper.
At the same time, according to Yuri Shamara, he was not aware of the geographical location of the golf club.
"As an enthusiast, he intended to provide support to a local golf club in financial difficulties," Shamara's lawyer added.
The British newspaper The Times reported on April 22 that Russian businessman Roman Abramovich appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in order to recognize the illegitimate actions of the British court, which froze his assets. It clarifies that the authorities concealed key information and ignored basic procedural guarantees. In this regard, Abramovich's defense considers this trial to be opaque and politically motivated.
