- The US Department of Justice has included execution in the list of methods of capital punishment.
The US Department of Justice has taken measures to restore the use of the federal death penalty, including the resumption of the lethal injection protocol and the introduction of the firing squad. This was announced on April 24 in a press release posted on the agency's website.
"The previous administration failed in its duty to protect the American people by refusing to prosecute and enforce capital punishment against the most dangerous criminals. <...> Under President [US Donald] Under Trump, the Justice Department is once again enforcing the law and supporting victims," said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Thus, the agency lifted the indefinite moratorium on federal executions imposed under former President Joe Biden. In addition, the statement says about the restoration of the protocol of executions using injections, the introduction of execution by firing squad as an additional method of execution, as well as simplification of internal procedures to speed up the consideration of death penalty cases.
According to The Guardian newspaper, in 2025, the United States set a record for the most executions in the last 16 years. It was noted that a total of 47 people were subjected to the death penalty during the year. They were all men. The number of death sentences has almost doubled compared to 2024.
