Merz called the accelerated entry of Ukraine into the EU impossible
Ukraine's immediate accession to the European Union (EU) is impossible. This was announced on April 24 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz following the EU summit in Cyprus.
"It is clear to everyone that Ukraine's immediate accession to the European Union is, of course, impossible," he said live on Phoenix TV channel.
He added that he had repeatedly discussed this issue with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. According to him, despite the fact that Kiev's rapid integration into the EU is impossible, it is necessary to take gradual steps towards this. For example, he proposed giving Ukraine the opportunity to participate in meetings of the European Council and the European Parliament without the right to vote. Merz noted that the announced initiative found a wide response among the leaders of the European states who participated in the discussion.
Yesterday, Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis said that at least one country could join the EU during Athens' presidency of the union in 2027. At the same time, the specific country that may join the EU is not specified.
In February, Zelensky demanded that the West set a date for Ukraine's accession to the European Union in 2027. He added that this is necessary for the country.
