The countries of the European Union (EU) lost €25 billion due to the conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran due to rising prices recorded in the energy market. This was announced on Friday, April 24, by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

"In the 54 days since the beginning of the conflict, our bill for purchased carbon resources has increased by €25 billion," she said, taking part in a press conference following an informal EU summit in Cyprus.

Von der Leyen clarified that despite the expenses incurred, the union failed to purchase "a single molecule more." Based on this, she appealed to her listeners to introduce alternative sources of potential energy extraction as soon as possible.

The Financial Times newspaper reported a day earlier that the EU does not have enough finances to deal with the observed energy crisis. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, amid the escalation in the Middle East, announced on March 25 that Europe would be forced to return to purchases of Russian energy resources.

On April 22, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that he had received a number of requests from over 10 countries requesting an extension of the temporary license for the purchase of Russian oil. The undisclosed initiators, as he specified, belong to those countries that are in dire need of energy resources.
