Another Russian woman abducted in Myanmar was freed from slavery
Another Russian citizen, who was fraudulently taken out of Thailand and abducted in early April in Myanmar, has been released. On April 24, the Vice-president of the Unified Coordination Center for the Support of Compatriots Abroad told Izvestia Ivan Melnikov.
According to him, the Russian woman was rescued as a result of coordinated actions by representatives of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Russian Foreign Ministry, the ECCC and the Myanmar army unit, which conducted a special operation on the border with Thailand.
"Now our compatriot is in the difficult conditions of the temporary detention center for foreign citizens of the republic," Melnikov said.
According to the human rights activist, the woman was lured to Thailand by an offer to get a high-paying job as a translator in a large company. She spent several weeks in captivity: the victim's documents were taken away, they threatened her and tried to force her to work in a bench center.
On February 3, the Russian Embassy in Thailand announced the release of a Russian woman from a fraudulent call center in Myanmar through the joint efforts of diplomats, Thai and Myanmar police. According to the diplomatic mission, there is a criminal network operating in Myanmar that recruits foreign citizens, including Russian citizens, for alleged employment in Thailand.
Prior to that, the Russian Embassy reported that three Russians had been abducted in Myanmar, presumably for forced labor in fraudulent call centers.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, said that diplomats are doing everything possible and necessary to return the abducted Russians from Myanmar. According to her, Russian diplomats have already managed, in cooperation with Myanmar's law enforcement agencies, to rescue one Russian citizen from such a center and return home.
