Residents of apartment buildings can go to court to oblige a neighbor to clean up their apartment if there is a persistent unpleasant odor coming from there, for example from pets. This was announced on April 24 by a lecturer at the Department of Family and Housing Law at the O. E. Kutafin University (MGUA). George Pachulia.

The expert explained that the owner of the apartment must comply with sanitary standards, which means that pungent odors from his apartment should not create discomfort for others.

"You can go to court with demands to oblige [the apartment owner] to disinfect the living space by cleaning the apartment in accordance with sanitary standards," Pachulia said.

In addition to the court, you can complain about the stench from the neighboring apartment to the district police officer, Rospotrebnadzor or the housing inspectorate. Rospotrebnadzor specialists will conduct an inspection and, if violations are detected, issue an order for elimination. The lawyer added that for non-compliance with sanitary and epidemiological requirements for the operation of residential premises, the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation provides for a fine of 500 to 1 thousand rubles for citizens.
