The most reliable way to protect seedlings from frost in the spring is non—woven covering materials. Nikita Chaplin, chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow region, State Duma deputy, expressed this opinion on Thursday, April 23. He also told us what to do if the plants have already been damaged.

"Spunbond, lutrasil and agrofibre allow air, moisture and light to pass through, but protect from cold up to minus seven degrees. Plastic wrap also works, but condensation accumulates under it, and plants can overheat. It is better to use it only on arcs with mandatory ventilation," the deputy said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the expert, the material should be selected according to density. He specified that the lightweight protects up to -2 degrees, it can be placed directly on the shoots. The medium one is suitable for arc greenhouses and saves up to -5 degrees, while the dense one is used for greenhouses and shrub shelters.

According to Chaplin, plants should be covered in the evening, before frosts, and removed in the morning. The material must be securely fastened so that it is not blown away by the wind. He added that abundant evening watering will help additionally — moist soil retains heat better.

If the frosts still damaged the seedlings, they need to be sprayed with cold water, and after a few days treated with biostimulants.

Earlier this day, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, said that on the night of Friday, April 24, temperatures are expected to drop to minus 1 degree in the Moscow region, the Moscow City News agency reports.

The day before, on April 22, Tishkovets said that frosts of up to -5.6 degrees had hit Central Russia everywhere. 360.ru . The cooling came to the districts of the capital heterogeneously: in Strogino it was -1.9, in Tushino -2.1, in Butovo -3.6, Moscow 24 clarifies.
