Orthodontist explained the reasons for the appearance of "shark teeth" in children
The growth of teeth "in two rows" in a child, which is often called "shark teeth", in most cases does not pose a serious threat, but requires the supervision of a specialist. Ayshat Amirkhanova, an orthodontist at the Atribyut clinic, told Izvestia about this on April 26.
"A similar situation occurs when the permanent tooth has already erupted, but the milk tooth has not yet fallen out. Most often this is due to insufficient chewing load: with the predominance of soft foods, baby teeth do not loosen naturally, and permanent teeth begin to erupt in the second row," the specialist explained.
Among other reasons, the expert cites genetic and anatomical features, such as a narrow jaw or an incorrect location of the rudiments of teeth. In more rare cases, we may be talking about hyperdontia — the presence of extra, super-complete teeth.
As Amirkhanova noted, in some situations, a "double row" is a temporary norm. This applies, for example, to the lower incisors: in about 70% of cases, the tongue eventually pushes the permanent tooth into the correct place, and the milk tooth falls out within a few months. However, if this does not happen, medical intervention is required.
"The reason for contacting a specialist is a situation where a baby tooth does not fall out for two to three months, as well as if a permanent tooth grows with a deviation or a problem occurs in the area of canines and chewing teeth," the orthodontist said.
Fixing a problem does not always require removal. Changing habits can help in the early stages, including solid foods such as apples and carrots in the diet, as well as controlling nasal breathing. These measures stimulate the natural loss of baby teeth and the proper formation of the jaw.
If the baby tooth remains in place, it may need to be removed. After that, the permanent tooth often takes the correct position on its own. In more complex cases, orthodontic treatment is used — special plates or braces.
The doctor pays special attention to the signs of hyperdontia. These include an excessive number of teeth, their unusual shape, or the appearance of a tooth "second row" without the presence of a milk precursor. In such situations, diagnosis is necessary, including X-ray examination.
The specialist recommends contacting a dentist or orthodontist at the first sign of shark teeth to determine whether the situation is a variant of the norm or requires treatment.
On April 9, Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, said that chronic stress causes serious harm not only to the nervous system, but also to the condition of the oral cavity, including teeth and bite. The specialist noted that a dentist often becomes the first doctor to notice signs of stress in a patient. These include chipped teeth, hypersensitivity, dry mouth, and jaw clicks.
