- The German Ministry of Defense seeks to train at least 460,000 military personnel and reservists
Germany has unveiled a new military strategy that maintains a target of 260,000 troops and 200,000 reservists in the Bundeswehr. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 22.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called this strategy a "living document" and said that Berlin was still striving to reach the number of the Bundeswehr at 460,000, of which 200,000 were reservists. This figure was established as a result of the reform of the law on military service, which came into force in January, the agency said.
Pistorius also spoke about the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, saying that the Ministry of Defense may seek help from neural networks in the future on the issue of "how many troops will be needed and with what qualifications." The minister stressed that the goal of the German Armed Forces is "to become the strongest army in Europe."
The Wall Street Journal reported on April 19 that Germany is striving to become a European arms manufacturing center amid the downturn in the automotive and heavy industries by reorienting car assembly plants to weapons production. Volkswagen is already negotiating with Israeli defense companies to start manufacturing components for the Iron Dome air defense system as early as 2027.
