The doctors of the second hospital of Zhejiang University saved a patient whose heart had not actually beaten for more than 40 hours. This was reported on April 22 by the Sohu publication.

"The patient was a man about 40 years old who was in a local hospital due to compression and emergency care in his chest, during which he suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, considered fulminant myocarditis," the publication says.

It is noted that attempts to restore the rhythm with the help of defibrillation were made almost ten times, but were unsuccessful. The patient's vital functions were supported only by hardware.

Doctors connected the man to the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system, which temporarily takes over the functions of the heart and lungs, and also applied additional methods to maintain blood circulation and prevent thrombosis.

"The patient had sustained ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous rhythm disorder in which the heart cannot pump blood efficiently," said Lu Xiao, a leading doctor at the emergency department.

After more than 40 hours of intensive therapy, the patient's heart began to gradually recover, and the rhythm returned to normal. The ECMO device supported the body for about 10 days, after which it was turned off. After about 20 days, the patient regained consciousness and was discharged without serious complications.

Doctors note that such cases are extremely rare and require a combination of modern technology, well-coordinated work of specialists and good luck.

Patrick Chernley, a British resident, suffered a 40-minute cardiac arrest on February 12 and survived. It was clarified that the incident occurred in 2021, when Chernli was 39 years old. He led an active lifestyle, had a hereditary disease, often overworked at work and spent time with his children.
