WP allowed Trump to conclude a deal with Iran like the JCPOA
US President Donald Trump may be forced to conclude a peace agreement with Tehran based on the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) of the former head of the White House, Barack Obama, from which Washington later withdrew. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on April 22.
"After a decade of fierce attacks on the previous Iran deal, Trump, seeking to find a way out of the war that he himself had unleashed, authorized American negotiators to consider an agreement that involves many of the same compromises that one of his predecessors faced," the article says.
Earlier, Trump and other Republicans criticized the 2015 agreement for transferring $1.7 billion to Iran as a settlement to a long-standing business dispute. Now, the Trump administration is considering the possibility of unfreezing $20 billion, which is partly revenue from the sale of Iranian oil and remains blocked in banks around the world due to sanctions.
According to the newspaper, this money "could be a bargaining chip." According to the author of the article, 11 years after the conclusion of the Obama deal, the world has changed dramatically.
The current Iranian government is taking a tougher line than the leaders who struck a deal with the former US president. Tehran also has a bargaining chip in the negotiations — it is already using its ability to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to an increase in energy prices around the world.
On the same day, Trump admitted that peace talks with Iran could take place within the next one and a half to three days. He also said on April 20 that he would not extend the temporary ceasefire with Tehran, which expires on the night of April 23.
At the same time, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali said on April 20 that it was Washington that had asked his country to prepare a plan for peace in the future. The draft prepared by the American side, as the head of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Russia added, was rejected by Tehran almost immediately.
