The number of immigrants permanently residing in the European Union (EU) reached a record high of 64.2 million in 2025, which is about 2.1 million more than in 2024. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 22, citing a report published by the Center for Migration Research and Analysis at the Berlin Regional University.

Germany ranks first in the EU in terms of the number of migrants: 18 million foreigners live in the country. The fastest growth in the number of visitors was demonstrated by Spain, where 9.5 million people born abroad live.

The study claims that migration flows in the EU countries are uneven. Luxembourg, Malta and Cyprus face a higher proportion of immigrants relative to their populations. At the same time, Spain, Italy, France and Germany account for almost three quarters of all asylum applications.

On April 19, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that for the first time since 2015, Germany had ceased to be the leader of the European Union in the number of asylum applications for migrants. For the first time since 2015, Germany took the fourth position in terms of the number of granted shelters in Europe, losing the leading positions to France, Spain and Italy.

The British newspaper The Standart reported on February 10 that 65,922 migrants had arrived in Britain by boat across the English Channel since the beginning of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's term, breaking the record of his predecessor Boris Johnson and becoming the highest figure among all the country's prime ministers.
