The surgeon called the "silent killer" of teeth among young people
Periodontitis is increasingly being diagnosed in patients aged 25-30 years, and the reason for this is everyday habits, not age. On April 25, maxillofacial surgeon, founder of the Estetus clinic, Candidate of Medical Sciences Sevak Barseghyan told Izvestia about this.
"Contrary to popular myth, the main cause of tooth loss in people under 40 is not caries. Caries destroys the tooth itself, and it's hard to miss because of the pain. But I call periodontitis a silent killer, because for years it destroys the foundation of the tooth — bone tissue, and it does it almost asymptomatically," he said.
According to the specialist, unlike caries, the disease does not cause severe pain in the early stages, which is why patients do not consult a doctor for a long time. The main mechanism is associated with the accumulation of bacterial plaque, which eventually turns into tartar and provokes gum inflammation.
Barseghyan stressed that stress, lack of sleep, smoking and vaping, as well as insufficient oral hygiene lead to the development of the disease. The first signs are bleeding gums, an unpleasant odor, and visual elongation of teeth due to exposed necks.
He added that the shakiness of the teeth indicates an advanced stage, when up to 70% of the bone tissue is destroyed. Ignoring the early symptoms can lead to tooth loss by the age of 35.
Barseghyan noted that prevention plays a key role: regular checkups, professional hygiene and removal of tartar. At home, it is important to use additional care products, including irrigators. The expert emphasized that periodontitis is associated not only with dental, but also with general health, since chronic inflammation can affect the course of other diseases.
On April 9, Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, said that chronic stress causes serious harm not only to the nervous system, but also to the condition of the oral cavity, including teeth and bite. The specialist noted that a dentist often becomes the first doctor to notice signs of stress in a patient. These include chipped teeth, hypersensitivity, dry mouth, and jaw clicks.
