The psychologist spoke about the blurred boundaries of growing up in the modern generation

In Russia, young people are increasingly experiencing a prolonged stage of growing up and a search for identity, which leads to infantile and difficult decision-making. Evgeniya Bereza, a clinical psychologist, specialist in psychosomatics and oncopsychology, told Izvestia about this on April 21.

"Modern young people live in prolonged adolescence, when the stage of searching for themselves, their identity and the meanings of life stretches for years. This is directly related to the identity crisis and increases anxiety due to the fear of making mistakes," the expert noted.

According to her, paradoxically, expanding the possibilities of choice does not make people freer, but, on the contrary, increases existential anxiety. The fear of making the wrong decision leads to procrastination and postponement of important life steps, which prevents the formation of mature skills and responsibility.

The expert also pointed to the impact of parental overprotection. When decisions are made for a child for a long time, he does not form independent experience, internal support and the ability to self-regulate. As a result, situations arise when older people remain psychologically at the stage of self-discovery.

Bereza emphasized that the key task of parents is to create a safe environment in which the child can make decisions and face their consequences without fear of mistakes. In her opinion, it is the ability to make mistakes and move on that shapes maturity, responsibility, and resilience.
