An explosion of ammunition in a tank turret occurred at a test site in Japan.

In Japan, at the Hishidai Self-Defense Forces training ground in Oita Prefecture, ammunition exploded in a tank turret during an exercise, the Japanese Kyodo news agency reported on April 21, according to the 47news portal.

According to the agency, three soldiers of the self-defense forces were killed in the emergency, and another was injured. They were all inside the tank when the explosion occurred.

"It is assumed that the ammunition exploded inside the turret of the tank. The victims were a 45—year-old sergeant and two sergeants aged 31 and 30. One of the victims suffered burns to his face, but, apparently, is conscious," the source said.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense is investigating the incident. An investigative commission has been established at the headquarters of the Western Army in the city of Kumamoto.
