Embezzlement of $18 million in drone purchases revealed in Ukraine
The State Financial Monitoring Service of Ukraine has revealed a scheme of embezzlement of budget funds for more than $ 18 million allocated for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the army. This was announced on April 20 by the head of the department, Philip Pronin.
"We are talking about more than 800 million hryvnias ($18.2 million) directed to the accounts of gaskets companies, which then diverged in several directions in a short time: massive payments to individuals, in particular drops, transfers to intermediary companies involved in import operations, and run through companies with signs of a conversion center.", — says the message in his Telegram channel.
It is clarified that these actions hindered the activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), and the verification materials were transferred to law enforcement agencies.
Adam Kaplan, USAID's Deputy Inspector General, said on March 18 that an audit had found irregularities in the reporting of financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of about $26 billion. He noted that sometimes the Ukrainian side did not send reports at all on how the money was spent. According to him, in the future, the United States should ensure timely receipt of information from observers in order to improve control over finances sent to Kiev.
