The expert spoke about the impact of mental health on security work
A person's mental state plays a key role when working in an environment of increased responsibility, especially in the field of security. Maria Todorova, a family psychologist, told Izvestia about this on April 20.
"In such professions, mental stability, self-control and the ability to quickly assess the situation are important. In an unstable state, a person's critical thinking, control over emotions, and decision—making accuracy may decrease," the specialist noted.
According to her, in stressful situations, people with mental disorders or addictions may face difficulties in self-regulation. This increases the risk of impulsive reactions or, conversely, delayed assessment of what is happening, which is critical when performing security-related tasks.
At the same time, the expert stressed that the presence of a diagnosis in itself does not determine a person's professional capabilities.
"It cannot be argued that all people with the same diagnosis are equally limited. The course of the condition, the availability of therapy, the level of adaptation and the duration of remission are important," Todorova explained.
She added that the widespread stereotype about the potential danger of people with mental disorders does not correspond to reality. In many cases, such people lead stable and socially adapted lives.
Nevertheless, the work of a security guard places increased demands on the psychological state. In this area, it is necessary to make decisions in conditions of risk, control behavior in conflict situations and be responsible for the safety of others.
According to the psychologist, emotional stability, discipline, attentiveness and the ability to maintain clarity of thinking under pressure are critically important for such specialists. In addition, the behavior must be predictable and follow established instructions.
Todorova noted that in an unstable state, the risks of errors in assessing threats, excessive reactions to ordinary situations, or, conversely, inhibition at a critical moment increase.
On April 19, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation approved a list of diseases in which citizens will not be able to get a job in security services. A total of 65 diseases are listed, of which 62 are mental disorders. We are talking about people suffering from chronic diseases such as schizophrenia, psychosis, gender identity disorder and the like.
