Spelling of the particle "not" and choosing between "n" and "nn" remain one of the most difficult topics in the Russian language. This is due to the fact that when writing, you have to take into account both grammatical rules and the meaning of the utterance at the same time. Philologist, comparative linguist Alyona Popova told Izvestia about this on April 20.

"In these cases, two principles collide — formal and semantic. A person needs to evaluate the part of speech, the presence of dependent words and intonation. These are several operations at the same time, and an error is possible at any stage," the specialist explained.

According to the expert, one of the most common problems is related to the spelling of "n" and "nn" in words located on the border between adjectives and participles. Errors occur when a word loses its verbal signs, but retains the same spelling, or vice versa.

Thus, the difference between the forms "educated" and "educated" is difficult, where the choice depends on the meaning. In the first case, we are talking about an action committed by someone, in the second - about the permanent quality of a person. As Popova notes, such cases cannot be mastered only by rote memorization — it is necessary to understand the context.

The expert also drew attention to the rules for writing "not". According to her, there is a universal approach that helps to reduce the number of errors.

"It is enough to take a short pause and ask yourself two questions: is it possible to replace a word with a synonym without "not", and is there an opposition in the sentence. This allows you to quickly determine whether to write together or separately," she said.

However, for verbs and adverbs, the rule is much simpler: in most cases, "not" is written separately, with the exception of words that are not used without this particle.

Popova stressed that such difficulties are a natural feature of the Russian language. They were formed during its historical development and reflect the processes of changing the meanings and forms of words.

According to her, the language was not created as a strict system, but developed as a tool for conveying complex meanings. That is why the rules that are perceived as exceptions today are actually the result of the evolution and richness of the language.

On the same day, Candidate of Philological Sciences Elena Khailova reported that the main difficulties for the participants of the "Total Dictation" in 2026 were writing "not" with the words "n" and "nn" in adjectives and participles, as well as uppercase and lowercase letters in proper and common names. She also noted that difficulties were caused by the spelling of unpronounceable and unverifiable consonants in the words "annul", "association", "scale", as well as the obsolete word "life guard", which many wrote together or separately instead of a hyphen.
