Zoomers shift spending from things to health and experience due to uncertainty and new values. Alexandra Grazhdanov, a psychologist in the AST (acceptance and responsibility therapy) approach, told Izvestia about this on April 20.
"The level of uncertainty has increased economically, socially and globally. <...> In such conditions, the value of long—term symbolic investments such as status items is decreasing, because it is not very clear what will happen next," she said.
According to the expert, representatives of generation Z pay more attention to mental health, so spending on therapy, sports and recreation is perceived not as a luxury, but as a necessity. In addition, the logic of values itself is changing: the priority is shifting from owning things to gaining experience — traveling, learning, and vivid impressions.
The expert emphasized that this approach contributes to a more stable self-assessment, as it is less dependent on external comparison. It also increases the subjective sense of well-being and can reduce the level of chronic stress. She added that in the digital environment, status through things is losing importance, as social media levels out differences and increases interest in authenticity and personal experience.
"And for Generation Z, it's not more important how I look to others, but what I'm going through, who I feel like," the expert explained.
According to her, in the long term, such a model can lead to an increase in awareness and a change in perceptions of success — from material indicators to quality of life.
At the same time, the specialist noted that with excessive concentration on self—development and the "ideal version of oneself," the opposite effect is possible - increased anxiety and burnout. She concluded that the current trend combines both long-term changes and a reaction to modern instability.
Psychologist, fire therapist Tatiana Smirnova said on April 16 that the growing popularity of the image of a traditional wife among girls is associated with fatigue from uncertainty, the influence of social networks and the desire for stability. According to the expert, digital overload plays an important role: in conditions of constant pressure and the need to meet expectations on social networks, the image of a wife and hostess seems simpler and more authentic.
