- The UAE has requested financial assistance from the United States in the context of the conflict with Iran
The United Arab Emirates has begun negotiations with the United States on obtaining financial support in the event of a war with Iran. This was reported on April 19 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
As noted in the publication, the head of the UAE Central Bank, Khaled Mohamed Balama, raised the issue of creating a currency swap line in a conversation with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant.
The Emirates fears that the conflict will damage the economy, scare off investors and deplete foreign exchange reserves, as well as disrupt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Although no official request has been received yet, the UAE considers this step as a preventive measure, noting that in case of a shortage of dollars, they may be forced to use the yuan or other currencies, which will weaken the dollar's position in oil calculations.
On April 14, the Russian Foreign Ministry's website reported that the Foreign Ministers of Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sergey Lavrov and Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had a telephone conversation during which they called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a political and diplomatic settlement of the crisis in the Middle East. It is specified that during the telephone conversation, the interlocutors exchanged assessments of the situation in the Persian Gulf zone after the US-Iranian talks in Islamabad and called for an immediate cessation of all hostilities, as well as for continuing political and diplomatic efforts to overcome the crisis that arose as a result of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
