- The Russian Ambassador to Germany took part in a memorial ceremony at the cemetery in Stansdorf.
On April 19, Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Waldfriedhof Guterfelde cemetery of Soviet forced laborers in Stansdorf near Berlin. Footage from the ceremony is published by Izvestia.
The event became the central action of the embassy on the occasion of the first Commemoration Day in Russia of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People committed by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War.
The ceremony at the Waldfriedhof Guterfelde (Stahnsdorf) was attended by Russian compatriots, German social activists and representatives of the Tatar diaspora.
Nechaev said that Moscow continues to seek official recognition from Berlin of the genocide of Soviet citizens during the Second World War.
"We are receiving signals from some political parties in Germany. As for the official recognition, so far there is no such thing. You know that we have repeatedly raised questions about this, for example, to the besiegers of Leningrad and the citizens who survived the blockade," the ambassador said.
Yesterday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that by setting a new memorial date, Russia not only honors the memory of Soviet citizens who died at the hands of the Nazis, but also defends the historical truth that the collective West is fighting against.
On April 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law punishing the denial and approval of the genocide of the Soviet people. Thus, for publicly denying the fact of genocide, one can face imprisonment for up to three years.
