A case has been opened in Ukraine against police officers who escaped from the scene of the shooting in Kiev.

A criminal case has been opened into the escape of police officers from the shooting scene in Kiev, where a man shot six people. This was announced on April 19 by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko.

"Criminal proceedings have been initiated into the fact of improper performance of official duties by police officers during a terrorist attack in the capital on April 18, 2026. <...> The episode of leaving a young child in danger and the untimely termination of the attacker's actions will receive a proper legal assessment," Kravchenko wrote on the Telegram channel.

He clarified that a criminal case had been opened on the fact of official negligence, which had serious consequences. According to him, the group of prosecutors in the case will be headed by the prosecutor of Kiev.

On April 18, an unknown person opened fire on people in the Holosiivsky district of Kiev. As a result of the incident, six people were killed and 15 others were injured. The man took people hostage and shot at the police during the arrest. He was eliminated by special forces.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine qualified the shooting as a terrorist act. Later, footage appeared on social networks showing how the police, having heard the first shots and screams of people, abruptly ran.
