Marina Romanova, a Russian pianist and the mother of 17-year—old Kristina Romanova, who is being held, said she expects to meet her daughter in person soon during the identification procedure. Marina Romanova told about this in an interview with Izvestia.

According to the woman, after a completely different child was shown to her at a video conference in court instead of Kristina, the Mexican authorities did not provide a recording of that court session. This deprives the Russian side of the opportunity to prove its case and violates all the principles of the International Court of Justice.

"The process is not conducted in accordance with international law, where the presence of both sides is a prerequisite. So far, everything is happening unilaterally, in the Mexican way, which is absolutely illegal," Romanova said.

It requires the prompt organization of the next step in accordance with the laws of international law, including the mandatory participation of representatives of Russia. The Russian Embassy in Mexico City and the Russian Foreign Ministry are involved in monitoring the situation.

On April 12, Yakov Fedorov, head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Mexico, said that the Mexican authorities refuse to return Kristina Romanova to Russia and have not provided consular access to her since August 2025. According to the diplomat, the girl is in a specialized facility of the Mexican Attorney General's Office for Family and Children Affairs. The Russian embassy has been dealing with this case since 2023 and is seeking Kristina's return to her homeland. At the same time, the minor herself also asked for assistance in repatriation.

On April 18, employees of the Russian Embassy in Mexico had the opportunity to visit Kristina Romanova for the first time since August 2025.
