Slovakia announced the possibility of blocking Ukraine's accession to the EU
Slovakia may block Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU). This was announced on April 19 by the Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament, Tibor Gaspar.
"Ukraine does not risk "automatically losing EU support," but it may face specific problems with Slovakia if conflicts (for example, in energy, transit, military aid) intensify. In the end, the Slovak Republic may block Ukraine's accession to the EU," he concluded in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The parliamentarian stressed that Slovakia is ready to support any country's accession to the EU only if it fully meets all requirements and is ready in all areas. He noted that, according to the Slovak leadership, Ukraine currently does not meet even the basic criteria for membership in the European Union.
On April 6, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Ukraine could start threatening European countries with its military experience in order to obtain the desired preferences in case of joining the European Union. The head of the Slovak government called on "major players" to pay attention to the current behavior of Kiev. In his opinion, European leaders can "watch live" the methods of interaction between the Ukrainian authorities and their partners.
