US pressure on the dissenting leaders of Latin American countries may lead to a "rebellion" against Washington's influence. This was announced on April 18 by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

"This is a system similar to that of the Spanish king several centuries ago. And what was the reaction of Latin America? Riot. This is exactly what will happen now if the US government fails to rethink its relations with Latin America," the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.

According to Petro, the United States bombing of the Venezuelan capital Caracas as part of an operation to capture President Nicolas Maduro in January "struck fear into many leaders." It is noted that Petro himself also often clashed with US President Donald Trump, whose administration put him on the sanctions list for his alleged involvement in the global illegal drug trade.

However, the Colombian president stressed that he has a good personal relationship with Trump. According to him, they recently talked twice and dispelled misconceptions about each other, adding that they met "as equals."

On March 20, The New York Times reported that the US authorities were investigating Petro, including examining his possible links to drug traffickers. It was clarified that the American leader had repeatedly criticized his Colombian counterpart, calling him a sick man.

At the same time, in January, the Colombian president said that he was not worried about himself after the capture of Maduro by the United States. According to Petro, he has devoted 10 years to investigating and publicly exposing links between powerful figures and armed drug traffickers.
