On April 18, on board his plane en route to Washington, US President Donald Trump evasively answered a question from journalists about possible military actions against Cuba.

"It depends on what you consider military action," the American leader said after a question.

The head of the White House said on April 13 that the United States "may look into" Cuba after it deals with Iran. The American president also called Cuba a failed state.

The USA Today newspaper reported on April 15 that military preparations had secretly begun in the United States for a possible military operation in Cuba under the leadership of the Pentagon if the American president gave the appropriate order. According to the publication, such preparations are an escalation of relations between the states, which deteriorated significantly in January 2026 after restrictions on oil supplies to the island.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced on April 12 that the republic did not want to go to war with the United States. He stressed that the invasion of the island would lead to serious costs and would affect the security of not only Cuba, but also the United States.
