A theoretical collision of a large asteroid with Earth could lead to a global catastrophe, similar to a nuclear winter. This was announced on April 18 by Nikolai Zheleznov, a senior researcher at the Institute of Applied Astronomy (IPA) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"According to experts, if the Earth collides with an asteroid from one and a half kilometers across, it will lead to a global catastrophe," Zheleznov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
