The expert reminded the Russians about two shortened days in April and May.
In Russia, April 30 and May 8 will be shortened working days in 2026. This was announced on April 18 by Alexander Yuzhalin, head of the legal practice at SuperJob.
"In the near future, Russians will expect not only the May holidays, but also shortened working days on the eve of these holidays — April 30 and May 8. Work on such days should be reduced by one hour, regardless of how long the employee's working day initially lasts," he told RIA Novosti.
This requirement is established by art. 95 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. It applies to all employers.
At the same time, the expert recalled that there are exceptions when the working day cannot be shortened for objective reasons. For example, when work in an organization is carried out continuously in shifts. However, the employer will still be required to either provide the employee with additional rest time, or pay for an hour of work as overtime.
As Yuzhalin emphasized, employees receiving salaries will not face a reduction in wages due to shorter working days.
On April 16, Sofya Lukinova, head of the legal department of VMT Consult, said that the initiatives of deputies to shorten the working day between the May holidays are not mandatory without making changes to the legislation, while for certain categories of employees the shortened working hours are already fixed at the level of the law.
Ekaterina Stenyakina, a member of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, announced on April 15 that holidays and non-working days in May 2026 would not affect the salaries of Russians. At the same time, additional support measures are provided for employees on hourly or piecework pay during non-working days.
