The United States is considering unblocking $20 billion of frozen Iranian funds in exchange for Tehran's abandonment of its enriched uranium reserves. This was reported on April 17 by the Axios portal, citing sources.

According to two sources, at an earlier stage of the negotiations, the United States was ready to allocate $6 billion to Iran for the purchase of food, medicines and other humanitarian goods. Tehran demanded $27 billion.

"The last amount that the United States and Iran discussed is $20 billion. One American official stated that this is a US proposal," the article says.

In addition, another American official called the concept of exchanging uranium for money "one of the many issues under discussion."

Washington has also asked Iran to agree to supply all of its nuclear materials to the United States, the sources added. As part of the compromise proposal under discussion, some of the highly enriched uranium will be shipped to a third country, not necessarily the United States.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced at an event in Las Vegas that the war in Iran would end soon.

The day before, Trump allowed a deal between the United States and Iran to expire. According to him, if the deal is not concluded before the expiration of the ceasefire, the United States will resume attacks on Iran. At the same time, he stated that he could go to Islamabad to sign an agreement with Iran, if it was reached.
