Former Arsenal goalkeeper Manninger died in a car accident at the age of 48.
Alex Manninger, the former goalkeeper of Arsenal London and the Austrian national football team, died in a car accident at the age of 48. This was announced on April 16 by the press service of the Austrian Football Union.
"Austrian football has lost not only an outstanding goalkeeper, but also a personality who has shaped the face of the nation's football over the years, representing it on the international stage," the organization's website says.
According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, the ex-goalkeeper was involved in a car accident at a railway crossing near the municipality of Nussdorf am Haunsberg (federal state of Salzburg).
"According to reports, Manninger was assisted on the spot by emergency services after his car was first dragged for several meters and then released from under the hood," the publication says.
Paramedics who quickly arrived at the scene of the tragedy were unable to resuscitate the player, he died on the spot. Presumably, the football player was alone in the car, the train driver and passengers were not injured. The police are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
Manninger's career began at the Austria Salzburg club, after which in 1997 he made a "historic transition" to Arsenal, becoming the first Austrian to play in the English Premier League. Subsequently, his international career took him to Italy, where he played for clubs such as Siena and Juventus.
By the end of his career, he remained a high-level player, playing for Liverpool for a while. Manninger played a total of 33 matches for the Austrian national team, including games at the 2008 European Championship.
On April 15, former Marine and experienced ultramarathoner David Parrish died while attempting to set a world record on the Cape Mouth extreme trail in Scotland with a length of more than 370 km. Parrish wanted to dedicate the race to his friend's memory and at the same time raise funds for a mountain rescue charity. The athlete's body was found late in the evening in a remote area in the north-west of the Scottish Highlands.
