Relations between Russia and Azerbaijan have great potential for mutually beneficial cooperation and are actively developing in various fields. This was stated on April 16 by Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko during a meeting with Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova on the sidelines of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

"Russian-Azerbaijani relations have a huge potential for mutually beneficial cooperation and are developing in a wide range of areas. We are also satisfied with how our interparliamentary cooperation is developing," Matvienko said.

The Chairman of the Federation Council also asked her colleague to convey greetings to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President of the Republic Mehriban Aliyeva. Matvienko recalled that the next meeting of the bilateral interparliamentary commission should be held in Azerbaijan this year.

"We believe it is necessary to resume the format that was last held in 2024, the forum of interregional cooperation," she added.

On March 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are based on a solid foundation of a common historical past and cultural heritage.

On March 11, Putin expressed gratitude to Aliyev in a telephone conversation for his assistance in evacuating Russian citizens from Iran. The Presidents also expressed their determination to continue developing areas of strategic partnership and alliance.
