The European Union has expressed concern over the possible victory in the parliamentary elections in Bulgaria of former President Rumen Radev, who adheres to a pro-Russian position on Ukraine. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on April 16.

"Radev has long held a position close to the Kremlin's line on Ukraine, and has repeatedly made it clear that he would like to resume importing Russian oil," the publication says.

Radev's political agenda, according to the publication, remains very vague, which gives reason for caution. He promises to defeat the "all-pervading mafia state" if he wins. The elections are scheduled for April 19.

Rumen Radev served as President of Bulgaria from 2017 to 2026. He resigned on January 19 to take part in early parliamentary elections, which became inevitable after the parties failed to form a new government.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced the resignation of the government in December 2025. According to Zhelyazkov, the citizens of the country called for the resignation of the government. Such actions, as stated, should be supported.
