Dentist dispelled the myth about the effect of braces on posture
There is a connection between bite and posture, but it is indirect and does not allow you to fix back problems with orthodontic treatment alone. Andrey Zhuk, dentist, orthodontist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, founder of the OrthoLike clinic, told Izvestia on April 20.
"The temporomandibular joint is connected to the muscles of the head and neck, and those in turn affect the shoulder girdle. It is logical to assume that the bite can somehow "pull" the muscles and spine. In practice, there is a connection, but it is not direct or magical. Correcting the bite by itself does not even out the posture and does not make a person "smoother," he noted.
According to the expert, malocclusion can create additional tension in the chewing and neck muscles, which in some cases extends to the upper back. This is especially noticeable in children and adolescents with impaired posture.
The specialist emphasized that there is an inverse relationship: problems with the spine and muscle balance can affect the formation of bite. The expert added that the widespread opinion about the possibility of correcting posture with braces is a myth. Posture is shaped by a variety of factors, including muscle condition and physical activity level.
"Bite correction reduces the strain on the muscles and helps the body keep the spine in a more natural position," he explained.
According to the expert, the optimal approach involves a comprehensive assessment of the body's condition, in which the orthodontist takes into account not only the position of the teeth, but also the work of muscles and joints. The expert noted that bite correction is primarily aimed at the health of teeth and joints, as well as the harmonization of muscle balance in the head and neck.
On April 9, Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, said that chronic stress causes serious harm not only to the nervous system, but also to the condition of the oral cavity, including teeth and bite. The specialist noted that a dentist often becomes the first doctor to notice signs of stress in a patient. These include chipped teeth, hypersensitivity, dry mouth, and jaw clicks.
