In 2026, the date falls on Thursday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.
Nikita Vodopol — 2026: the history of the holiday
St. Nikita the Confessor lived in the 8th–9th centuries in Byzantium. According to church tradition, he came from a pious family and was raised in Christian traditions. At the age of 17, after completing his studies, the future saint arrived in Constantinople, where he entered the service of the court.
Nikita's life in the capital was going well. During the reign of Empress Irina and her son Konstantin, he quickly rose through the ranks, but he was not attracted to a court career. Therefore, the future saint decided to leave the secular path and become a monk.
Nikita did not immediately receive permission to leave. By the will of the authorities, he remained for some time in the capital's monastery at the Golden Gate, in a place known as Chrysonikia. Later, the saint went to the Midikian monastery, where he took vows, attended a school of strict cenobitic monasticism, and eventually became one of the most prominent figures.
For his meekness, obedience, mercy, and self-strictness, he was ordained a presbyter a few years later, and then elected abbot. It was at the Midikian monastery that Nikita gained fame as an experienced mentor and a man of deep prayer.
Church tradition says that Nikita was endowed with the gift of miracle-working, through his prayers a deaf-mute boy spoke, the madman regained his mind, and two possessed women were healed. They went to him not only for spiritual advice, but also for help in illnesses and difficult life circumstances.
The hardest part of his biography came during the years of iconoclastic persecution. Under Emperor Leo the Armenian, and then under Theophilus, Nikita openly opposed heresy, for which he was thrown into prison, and then sent into exile.
Both in prison and in exile, Nikita continued to pray and help people. There are stories in his life that through his prayers the prisoners were freed, and the shipwrecked people escaped and were carried ashore by the waves.
Traditions of the national holiday celebrated in Russia on April 16
In Russia, St. Nikita the Confessor Memorial Day was associated with an ice break and the beginning of the fishing season. By the middle of April, the rivers opened, the water rose noticeably, the flood season began, hence the "talking" name of the holiday — Nikita Vodopol.
For the ancestors, it was both an important and an anxious time. On the one hand, fishing was opening up, on the other hand, large water could bring a lot of trouble if it overflowed its banks and approached villages, for example, demolish bridges, wash away the banks and flood the farm.
It was customary to start the morning on Nikita Vodopol with a visit to the church. Believers lit candles and prayed to the saint, who was considered a protector from the elements of water, misfortunes on the way and sudden disaster. He was asked to protect his home and family from the troubles that big water can bring.
According to legend, on April 16, the Water awakened. To protect the village from flooding, and the fishermen from bad luck and dangers on the water, they tried to appease him. Hence the other name of the holiday — a Water Treat. The housewives cooked porridge with milk, baked bread, put treats in a canvas bag and carried them to the nearest pond, after which they lowered the gifts into the water.
A bonfire was lit on the shore, dances were performed and songs were sung about the master of the river depths. Reeds were always brought home from the shore. He was dried, burned, and fumigated in his home. According to beliefs, such a rite helped to avert the disaster associated with the water element. Fishermen also prepared "offerings" to the Merman. At dawn, they poured oil into the water, believing that a disgruntled spirit could leave a person without a catch or even drag them to the bottom.
Another rite was associated with the restoration of strength after the winter, with the influx of vital energy and with the expectation of monetary luck. To do this, wash your face with water that has settled in advance, and then pour it under a young tree.
