The European Commission is studying a number of measures to mitigate the effects of the energy crisis caused by the conflict over Iran. Among them is providing at least one day a week for remote work or reducing the cost of public transport. This was reported on April 15 by the Spanish newspaper El Pais with reference to the draft package of initiatives being developed by Brussels.

The conflict started by the United States and Israel has already cost the Europeans more than €22 billion in additional costs for importing fossil fuels, the newspaper notes. Possible measures also include the closure of public buildings, where possible.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to present her proposals to the leaders of the European Union (EU) next week. In addition, Brussels is proposing to issue special energy vouchers to vulnerable households or reduce electricity taxes for them.

The European Commission also calls on national and local authorities to ensure that energy suppliers advise customers on the best tariff and warn them about consumption peaks. Brussels has once again focused on renewable energy sources, seeing them as a solution to the crisis and a path to energy security.

The day before, the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Pierre-Olivier Gurinsha noted that the war in Iran threatens the world with an unprecedented energy crisis. According to him, before the start of the war, the IMF was going to raise its global growth forecast, but the consequences of the conflict "exceeded the influence of basic factors."
