Togo called on the UN to abandon the world map with a smaller image of Africa
The Togolese Republic led the diplomatic initiative of African countries, calling on the countries of the United Nations (UN) to abandon the Mercator projection map, which distorts the scale of the continent. This was reported on April 15 by the ClashReport portal.
According to him, Togo is preparing a draft resolution for the UN General Assembly, which is expected to be voted on in September. Instead of the Mercator projection, which visually reduces the equatorial regions, African countries propose using the Equal Earth projection, which preserves relative scales, developed in 2018.
Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dussey said the current map is "geographically inaccurate," noting that Africa is about 14 times the size of Greenland, despite the fact that it looks similar in size on widely used maps.
The initiative was supported by all 55 member States of the African Union (AU). According to Dussey, the results of the UN vote will show the "true face" of the countries, as the issue has political weight. The campaigners stressed that this is not just a "technical adjustment," but a step to restore "cognitive justice" and "narrative sovereignty," reflecting a broader desire to change global perceptions.
On December 20, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that African countries have enormous potential and play a significant role in global politics. He noted that the Russian Federation attaches great importance to the development of equal and mutually beneficial relations with African partners. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov clarified that Russia was determined to unlock the potential of cooperation with African countries.
