- AP has learned about the approach of an agreement to extend the truce between the United States and Iran.
Peace mediators between the United States and Iran are close to resuming negotiations and extending the ceasefire, which expires on April 22. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP) on April 15, citing official sources.
"The mediators have moved closer to extending the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and resuming negotiations to salvage the fragile truce before it expires next week," the publication says.
Regional officials said they were making progress as the United States and Iran reached an "agreement in principle" to extend the truce to allow for further diplomacy.
The sources noted that the mediators are seeking a compromise on three main points of contention that disrupted direct talks over the weekend: the Iranian nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz and compensation for damage caused as a result of the war.
"World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said on Tuesday that the resumption of negotiations in the coming days is very likely," the article says.
As Al Mayadeen correspondent Mohammad Karim reported on April 15, the possibility of a ceasefire was never mentioned during the trilateral negotiations on the settlement of the conflict between Lebanon and Israel.
Marwan Abdullah, head of the Kataib party's foreign relations department, said on the same day that the Lebanese parliament allowed the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, but only if a number of conditions were met. He also outlined the country's key priorities in the negotiation process with Israel, stressing that the main condition remains the prevention of a new armed conflict.
