- Erdogan says hopes for peace are being undermined after continuous Israeli attacks on Lebanon
The ongoing attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Lebanon are undermining all hopes of restoring peace in the region. This was announced on April 15 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to him, the ongoing military actions undermine broader efforts to ensure stability. Speaking to members of parliament, the Turkish leader stressed that it is necessary to take advantage of the opportunity created by the ceasefire to advance diplomatic efforts.
"The Israeli government, which is known to be unhappy with the ceasefire process, should not be allowed to sabotage it. Negotiations cannot be conducted with clenched fists. We must not allow weapons to speak instead of words again. It is necessary to use the window of opportunity opened by the ceasefire," Anadolu agency quoted the Turkish leader as saying.
Erdogan said that Turkey "will continue to defend the rights of our brothers, whose lands are occupied in the West Bank, and will defend the rights of children killed in their sleep in Lebanon."
As Al Mayadeen correspondent Mohammad Karim reported on April 15, the possibility of a ceasefire was never mentioned during the trilateral negotiations on the settlement of the conflict between Lebanon and Israel.
Marwan Abdullah, the head of the Kataib party's foreign relations department, said on the same day that the Lebanese parliament allowed the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, but only if a number of conditions were met. He also outlined the country's key priorities in the negotiation process with Israel, stressing that the main condition remains the prevention of a new armed conflict.
