Pichugin remembered the dying words of his relatives
Mikhail Pichugin, who survived a two-month drift in the Sea of Okhotsk, spoke about the deaths of his 15-year-old nephew Ilya and brother Sergei. The archive video of the interview is published by Izvestia on April 14.
He said that Ilya died first, about a month after the engine broke down. There was almost no water or food left. The travelers were lying in a boat in a comatose state due to exhaustion and night storms that did not allow them to sleep.
"Ilya used to make some noises, he asked me for water: "Uncle Misha, is there water?" I hear that he doesn't say anything else. He was skinny and tall," Mikhail recalls.
The teenager's body was secured in the stern, and his face was covered with a hat because of the seagulls that periodically chased the boat. The teenager's father, Sergei, was getting worse by that time.
According to Mikhail, even before his son's death, he began to have hallucinations.: it seemed to him that they were running aground, he shouted "drop anchor", asked for a charger for his phone. Pichugin said that his brother sat down in the stern, raised his head and stopped reacting — by that time he was no longer breathing.
On October 15, 2024, fishermen discovered a boat in the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk in Kamchatka, which disappeared on August 9. The only survivor, Mikhail Pichugin, was on it, and there were the bodies of two of his relatives — his brother and nephew. Pichugin was taken to Magadan and hospitalized. After being discharged at the end of the same month, he returned to Buryatia.
In January of this year, Pichugin confessed to violating the law. It was clarified that he had gone beyond the 3 km allowed by law from the coast. The investigators also charged the man with violating the rules of operation of a small vessel, resulting in the death of people. On April 14, the Oktyabrsky court of Ulan-Ude found Pichugin guilty and sentenced him to three years of forced labor. He was also fined 40,000 rubles.
