The levers of pressure that the United States has left to unblock the Strait of Hormuz are exclusively of a military-technical nature. This was announced by Grigory Lukyanov, Deputy Dean of the Oriental Faculty of the State Academic University of Humanities, on Tuesday, April 14.

According to the expert, there is practically no room for compromise with Iran.

The orientalist recalled that in the first phase of the conflict, Iran randomly placed a large number of mines in the strait, which paralyzed shipping. It is difficult to remove them not only because of the lack of political will of Tehran, but also because of technical limitations, so the demands of American President Donald Trump may simply be impossible and require comprehensive international measures.

"The United States and Iran continue to occupy diametrically opposed positions. The round of negotiations, which, relatively speaking, took place in Essaouira, demonstrated that exactly what the parties presented publicly is what they believe in. Therefore, the space for negotiation and compromise is very small," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to Lukyanov, the situation is not limited to the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, and even if Iran unilaterally makes concessions to the United States, this does not negate the other claims that Washington makes and which are unacceptable to Tehran.

He added that Iran's main demand is the complete exclusion of America from the equation in the Persian Gulf. Control of the strait should be carried out exclusively by countries with direct access to it, primarily Iran and Oman themselves.

Lukyanov clarified that the primary issue is a fundamental disagreement between the parties on how the Strait of Hormuz should function and how this issue should be integrated into the entire system of conflict issues between Iran, the United States and various monarchies of the Persian Strait, while the clearance of the waters and the withdrawal of foreign ships is a secondary issue.

Earlier in the day, The Wall Street Journal newspaper wrote that Saudi Arabia is putting pressure on the United States to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table, according to the website. kp.ru . Saudi Arabia fears that Trump's decision could lead to an escalation by Iran and disrupt other important shipping routes, RT reports.

On April 13, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) announced the beginning of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States due to the failure of negotiations between Washington and Tehran. It is carried out against ships of all countries entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports in the Arabian and Oman Gulfs.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on the same day that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States would negatively affect international energy markets. According to him, Moscow is ready to help resolve the conflict.
