The Atlantic pointed to the strategic importance of the American blockade of Hormuz
The United States announced the imposition of a naval blockade on Iran after the failure of the ceasefire talks in order to gain advantages in the upcoming negotiations, complicating the economic situation for Tehran. This was reported on April 14 by The Atlantic magazine.
"The main American interest today is to approach the next round of negotiations with a clear advantage, making Iran's economic life as difficult as possible. In other words, in order to reach a peace agreement during the already announced ceasefire, the United States considers it necessary to wage a new type of war, this time aimed at Iran's economy, which is heavily dependent on energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz," the publication says.
The decision on the blockade was made after a six-week military campaign by American and Israeli troops did not force Tehran to make concessions, and meetings between representatives of the parties did not yield results. The new plan is mainly aimed at preventing the export of Iranian oil from ports.
According to The Atlantic, significant forces will be required to control the Strait of Hormuz, including at least two aircraft carrier strike groups, destroyers, patrol aircraft and drones. In response, Iran may use asymmetric tactics, including the use of mines and missiles against US naval forces.
On April 12, US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy was beginning to block all ships that would attempt to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the negotiations in Islamabad went well, but the key nuclear issue remained unresolved. Trump said Iran had prevented free passage for ships by using threats about mines.
The Vice President of the United States, Jay D. Vance, said on the same day that the Iranian and American sides had not reached a common agreement during the negotiations in Islamabad. According to Vance, the American side does not yet see Iran's readiness to abandon the development of nuclear weapons.
