The doctor spoke about the impact of repairs on the health of residents
Living in an apartment with rough finishing can negatively affect your health due to dust and chemical compounds in the air. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a doctor and expert at the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestia about this on April 14.
"The materials used in construction can have an irritating or even toxic effect," she noted.
According to the expert, concrete, cement mixtures, plaster and other building materials are not intended for permanent contact with humans. They can release dust and volatile substances, causing coughing, dry eyes, skin irritation, and allergic reactions. With prolonged exposure, the risk of chronic intoxication is not excluded.
The expert explained that the main danger is construction dust containing particles of cement, lime and quartz. If inhaled regularly, it irritates the respiratory tract, increases the tendency to inflammation and may increase sensitivity to allergens.
Also, such conditions can weaken the local immunity of the mucous membranes, which increases the frequency of colds and slows down recovery from them. High humidity is a separate risk factor. It promotes the formation of mold, which is a strong allergen and can cause a prolonged runny nose, cough and skin reactions.
According to the expert, children, the elderly, pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases of the respiratory system are especially vulnerable. In young children, due to the peculiarities of the structure of the respiratory tract and immaturity of the immune system, the risk of negative consequences is higher.
The expert added that the finishing performs not only an aesthetic, but also a protective function — it reduces dust and limits contact with potentially harmful substances, creating a safer microclimate.
"If it is not possible to make a final repair immediately, it is important to take care of the composition of the rough materials, high-quality ventilation and regular wet cleaning. It makes sense to purchase a vacuum cleaner with a good filter and an air purifier. It also makes sense to monitor the humidity level: ideally, it should be in the range of 40-60%. If necessary, you can use humidifiers or dehumidifiers," Demyanovskaya emphasized.
Alexey Bessmertny, an allergist and immunologist at the Soft Medical Center, reported on April 14 that information about an allegedly new "strain" of Stratus pollen was not true, and seasonal allergies were taking place as usual this year. According to the expert, hay fever is a seasonal phenomenon that repeats itself at the same time every year. This year, dusting began on a standard schedule — in late February and early March from alder and hazel (hazel), and an active phase of birch flowering is expected in the coming weeks.
