Merz promised to help Zelensky return men of military age to Kiev.
Germany is ready to assist Ukraine in the return of Ukrainian men of military age who are in Germany. This was announced on April 14 by Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin, the newspaper "Strana.ua" in his Telegram channel.
The head of the German government stressed that Berlin intends to work closely with the Ukrainian side on the issues of citizens who have received asylum in Germany. Merz noted that the authorities plan to simplify the process of their return to their homeland as much as possible.
In addition, the parties agreed on joint measures to reduce the number of Ukrainians seeking refugee status in Germany. According to the Chancellor, it is important that these men stay in Ukraine.
Zelensky supported the initiative of the German side, noting the need to replenish the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
"I agree with you about people of mobilization age who left temporarily, but it turned out to be for years. <...> Our Armed Forces would like them to return," he said.
In Berlin, the local police completely blocked off the government quarter of the city on the same day against the background of Zelensky's visit. It is noted that Zelensky's visit to Berlin is planned as part of intergovernmental consultations. In the German capital, the Ukrainian president met with Merz.
On April 7, Merz demanded that Zelensky stop the flight of Ukrainians to Europe. The German politician stressed that the Kiev authorities need to ensure the employment of their own citizens in their state.
