The decline in demand for sanatorium services is due to rising prices and the industry's dependence on government programs. Alexander Perepelkin, founder of the premium travel agency PrimeTours, told Izvestia about this on April 14.

"A sanatorium-resort product is more expensive than a classic vacation. And with a limited budget, tourists primarily refuse it," he said.

According to the expert, a significant part of sanatoriums in Russia are focused on government programs that generate workload at the expense of privileged categories of citizens. Changes in such programs directly affect the market. He clarified that the mass and part of the middle segment of tourists remain the most sensitive to price increases. These categories either refuse to travel, or choose more simplified vacation formats without medical procedures.

At the same time, as the expert noted, a new audience is being formed in parallel. There is a growing interest in a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention among young and middle-class travelers, which supports the demand for wellness services.

The expert added that pricing is also affected by rising costs, including changes in the tax burden and rental payments. In these conditions, sanatoriums are forced to balance between price restraint and restructuring of financial models. According to him, the market is gradually consolidating: the number of sanatoriums is decreasing, but the number of rooms and the scale of facilities are increasing.

"This means that the market is consolidating and enlarging: large sanatoriums are either strengthening or increasing the number of rooms," Perepelkin said.

At the same time, the premium segment demonstrates sustainability. In this category, customers are less price-sensitive, and sanatoriums compete due to the level of service, the introduction of new techniques and the development of infrastructure.
