The trial of Maradona's death has begun in Argentina.
Seven people who were part of the medical staff providing postoperative care for Argentine football player Diego Maradona have appeared in court, accused of murdering the legendary athlete by negligence. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 14.
"The San Ysidro court, near Buenos Aires, will hear testimony from almost 100 witnesses in the case of the alleged negligence of Maradona's medical staff, which led to the death of the world champion," the material says.
Prosecutors allege that medical workers violated treatment protocols, and the house where Maradona was recovering from brain surgery was a "theater of horror" in which the necessary care was not provided.
However, the employees deny all charges, and their lawyers believe that the death of the football player was inevitable, since the football player had long-standing health problems, and, moreover, he had been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction for many years. If convicted, the defendants face prison sentences ranging from 8 to 25 years.
The La Nacion portal reported on March 27, 2025, citing a medical examiner, that Maradona could have been in agony for up to 12 hours before his death. Upon autopsy, it turned out that Maradona's heart weighed 503 grams, which is twice the norm for an adult of his age.
Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60. The cause of death was acute heart failure, which led to pulmonary edema. The Argentine prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into alleged negligence on the part of the ex-footballer's doctors.
