Colombia decided to euthanize about 80 hippos of Pablo Escobar
In order to control the hippopotamus population, the Colombian government decided to euthanize a number of individuals. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 13.
"We must act to reduce the population of hippos. These measures are necessary to protect our ecosystems and our native species," said Colombian Environment Minister Irene Velez.
She said that population growth threatens species such as river turtles and manatees, and also causes water pollution.
Colombia's first four hippos were illegally imported in the 1980s by the late drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, who founded a zoo on one of his territories. Since then, the population has grown almost uncontrollably, despite some efforts by provincial environmental authorities. There are currently around 200 hippos living in Colombia.
On April 12, BBC News reported on the installation of a monument to a sapper rat in Cambodia. During her career, she discovered more than 100 mines and helped clear large areas of explosive objects.
