US President Donald Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV is unacceptable. This was announced on April 13 by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

"I consider President Trump's words to the Holy Father unacceptable. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is only natural that he calls for peace and condemns all forms of war," ANSA newspaper quoted Meloni as saying.

The Italian prime minister reacted in this way to Trump's unflattering words addressed to the pontiff. The American president called Leo XIV "weak in matters of international relations and the fight against crime." He added that he would not like to see the head of the Catholic Church a Pope who approves of Iran's possession of nuclear weapons.

On April 12, the American leader criticized Leo XIV, saying that the pontiff owes his post to the United States. Trump called US citizenship one of the main reasons for the election of Pope Leo XIV, linking this with the desire of the church to deal with him.

On April 7, during a speech in Italy, the Pope called President Trump's threats against Iran and its people completely unacceptable. He called on the international community to think about the consequences of a possible military clash for civilians.
