The European Union (EU), by imposing an indefinite lock on the sovereign assets of the Central Bank of Russia, violated both international and European law regarding the immunity of central banks of third countries. This follows from the claim of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which the regulator sent to the EU Council on April 13.

"The fifth reason is the violation of Treaties of customary international law and norms of public international law. The plaintiff claims that the Council violated the principle of the sovereign immunity of states and their central banks, which is included in EU law as a norm subject to judicial review," RIA Novosti cites the text of the document.

As noted in the lawsuit, the EU regulations provide for a long-term and permanent freezing of the plaintiff's sovereign reserves, without respecting the immunity granted to the assets of central banks. It also establishes a mechanism that deprives the Central Bank of any legal protection, which violates the fundamental rights of the European Union.

Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said on April 2 that the Europeans involved in the seizure of Russian assets would end up in debt. According to him, the European officials who were recruited into the leadership of the European Union (EU) are prone to "robberies, thefts of other people's money and property." He added that the stolen income from the assets of the Russian Federation in Europe will have to be returned to the state with interest.

On February 27, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed the opinion that European countries would continue attempts to steal Russian frozen assets. He pointed out that there are a number of states that are aware of the inevitable negative consequences that the decision to expropriate Russian funds will lead to.
