Preparing your dog for a visit to the vet or groomer helps reduce stress and make the procedures more comfortable. Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told Izvestia about this on April 16.

"The main rule here is the same as in classical positive reinforcement training: no violence, just a mutually beneficial exchange. If you force the dog, literally drag it into the treatment room, your next visit will be even more difficult," he said.

According to the expert, it is important to teach the pet in advance to the manipulations he will encounter. For example, before cutting claws, it is useful to practice the "Give a paw" command, and also to train the dog to react calmly to touch. This allows you to form positive associations and facilitate the procedure itself.

The expert added that in a similar way, an animal can be introduced to medical instruments in advance, taught to show teeth, ears, and also accustomed to sounds, for example, to a hair dryer. Without such training, a pet may experience fear and refuse to make repeated visits.

The specialist recommended paying special attention to the owner's behavior. Dogs sense human anxiety, so it is important to remain calm and confident so as not to increase the stress of the animal.

"If, while waiting for the doctor, the dog still starts to worry, tremble, yawn, lick his nose, the main thing is not to feel sorry for him. That's how you encourage her fear. We need to continue talking to her in a confident, cheerful voice, not to persuade her, but to try to distract her with some commands or toys," the specialist added.

He noted that after the visit it is important to consolidate the positive experience. The expert advises to praise the pet, treat him and give him the opportunity to relax.

Golubev explained on April 10 why the dog lies on the owner's things when he is not there. According to him, human things are a real antidepressant, a sedative for dogs. And their habit of taking away the owner's belongings is not harmfulness or revenge, but natural behavior.
