Starmer called on social networks to get rid of the feed scrolling mechanisms
Social networks such as Instagram (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) and TikTok should take measures against endless scrolling algorithms that force users to spend hours in online space. This was announced on April 13 by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"I think it's equally important that the addictive scrolling mechanisms [of social media feeds] are, in my opinion, really problematic. We need to get rid of them," the Reuters news agency quoted the politician as saying.
The British Prime Minister also stressed that social networks have deliberately implemented algorithms that encourage addictive behavior (a form of addiction characterized by an obsessive need to escape from reality), in connection with which parents have asked the UK government to intervene and influence the operation of online platforms.
The UK, like many other countries, is considering restricting children's access to social media and is testing various restrictive measures, including curfews and app usage time limits, to assess their impact on sleep, social life and school performance.
On April 8, Reuters reported that Greece plans to announce a new bill that would ban the use of social media by children under the age of 15. It was emphasized that if Athens announces new restrictive measures in the online space, the country will join the list of other states in which similar bills have either already been adopted or are actively being developed.
Reuters also reported on March 27 that the Austrian authorities want to ban the use of social networks by children under the age of 14. It was noted that the risks that online platforms brought to the life and development of Austrian youth "were ignored for quite a long time."
